Residential Carpentry Repairs and Installations
Need a timber repair or a small carpentry job completed around your home?
I provide residential carpentry repairs, maintenance and selected installations for houses, units and townhouses across Canberra.
With more than 20 years of hands-on repair and maintenance experience, I work on common problems involving damaged timber, doors, trims, gates, cabinetry fittings, decks and other small to medium-sized jobs.
Where practical, I aim to repair or replace the affected component without expanding the job unnecessarily.
The available repair method depends on the condition of the existing materials, access, surrounding construction, concealed damage and the agreed scope of work.
Carpentry Repair Services
Deck Repairs and Maintenance
Selected deck repairs may include:
- Replacement of individual damaged or deteriorated boards
- Minor repairs to accessible timber components
- Refastening loose boards
- Small maintenance repairs where the surrounding structure remains suitable
- Preparation and recoating of selected timber areas where agreed
Extensive deterioration, unstable framing or concealed damage may require further assessment or a larger repair scope.
Stair Treads and Handrails
Selected repairs and adjustments to:
- Loose or damaged stair treads
- Accessible handrails
- Timber fixings and connections
- Minor movement or wear
Work depends on the condition of the underlying stair structure and whether the repair can be completed safely within my scope.
Timber Doors
Door work may include:
- Fitting and hanging suitable doors
- Planing and clearance adjustments
- Alignment and closing issues
- Minor timber repairs
- Hinge, handle and latch installation
- Repairs to suitable frames, jambs and trims
Specialist security, fire-rated and commercial door systems are outside my scope.
Cabinetry Repairs and Adjustments
Repairs and adjustments may include:
- Hinges
- Handles
- Catches
- Drawer runners
- Cabinet doors
- Accessible fittings and hardware
- Minor repairs to suitable cabinet components
Custom cabinetry manufacture and large kitchen renovations are outside my usual scope.
Skirting Boards, Architraves and Mouldings
Minor repair, replacement and installation of:
- Skirting boards
- Architraves
- Timber mouldings
- Decorative trims
- Small damaged or missing sections
The finished appearance may be affected by the age, profile and availability of matching materials.
Weatherboards, Cladding and Exterior Trims
Selected repairs may include:
- Replacement of identified damaged timber boards
- Small weatherboard repairs
- Accessible timber trim repairs
- Minor external maintenance work
The material must be safe to work on and suitable replacement profiles will need to be checked.
Pergolas and Exterior Timber
Selected repairs to accessible exterior timber components may be considered where:
- Access is safe
- The condition can be reasonably assessed
- The repair does not require specialist engineering, certification or extensive rebuilding
- Roofing or high-risk access work is not required
Fascia, Eaves and External Timber Trims
Minor accessible timber repairs may be considered where roofing work, gutter replacement, asbestos disturbance or high-risk access is not required.
Fences and Gates
Selected repairs may include:
- Timber palings
- Rails
- Hinges
- Latches
- Gate alignment
- Small damaged gate components
- Minor fastening and adjustment work
Large fencing projects, extensive replacement and jobs requiring multiple workers are outside my usual scope.
Termite-Damaged or Rotted Timber
Selected timber repairs may be considered after the source of the damage has been properly addressed.
For termite damage, the pest activity must be professionally treated before repair work proceeds.
The full extent of rot, pest damage or deterioration may not be visible until damaged materials are removed. Further work, specialist assessment or a revised scope may be required if more extensive damage is uncovered.
Small Carpentry Installations
I also undertake selected small carpentry installations, including:
- Timber shelves and storage components
- Suitable wall-mounted cabinets
- Door and gate hardware
- Timber trims and mouldings
- Small timber components
- Selected household fixtures
- Straightforward flat-pack or pre-manufactured items by agreement
The item, location, fixing surface, access and supplied hardware must be suitable for the proposed installation.
Hidden Damage and Existing Conditions
Damage behind plaster, cladding, trims, decking or other finished surfaces cannot always be fully assessed before the area is opened.
Hidden conditions may include:
- Rot or moisture damage
- Pest damage
- Inadequate framing or support
- Previous unsuitable repairs
- Corroded or failed fixings
- Movement in the surrounding structure
- Materials that no longer match available products
If additional damage or unsuitable conditions are uncovered, I will explain how they affect the scope, materials, price and time required before further work proceeds where practical.
Carpentry Work Outside My Scope
I do not carry out:
- Large renovations
- New-home construction
- Large or complex multi-person projects
- Roofing work
- Asbestos work
- Work requiring specialist trade licensing
- Building work requiring a licensed builder
- Work requiring engineering design, building approval or specialist certification
Some repairs involving structural components may be considered where the work is lawful, within my experience and does not require a licensed builder, engineer or specialist contractor.
Where a job falls outside my scope, I will explain the issue and suggest the most appropriate next step.
Carpentry Service Area
Residential carpentry repair and selected installation services are available across ACT districts, including Gungahlin, Belconnen, North Canberra, South Canberra, Woden, Weston Creek, Molonglo and Tuggeranong.
Availability depends on the job type, scope, access, parking, materials required and current workload.
Safety and Suspected Asbestos
Please tell me before work begins if you know or suspect asbestos-containing material may be present in or near the work area.
Homes built before 1990 are likely to contain asbestos products, and homes built or renovated before 2003 may still contain them. Where this applies, I may need confirmation the area is safe, or suitable testing, before work proceeds.
