Plaster Repairs and Patching in Canberra

I’m Brett, the owner-operator of My Canberra Handyman. I provide residential plaster and plasterboard repairs across Canberra, with a focus on careful preparation, practical repair methods and a neat, well-presented finish.

With more than 20 years of hands-on experience in residential repair and maintenance work, I repair common plaster and Gyprock damage in houses, units and townhouses. I assess the damage, the surrounding surface and any likely movement or moisture issues before recommending a repair method suited to the condition and agreed scope.

My aim is to complete a sound, consistent repair that is ready for painting or finishing. The final appearance may still be influenced by the existing surface condition, texture, previous repairs, lighting and paint colour.

Common Plaster and Plasterboard Repairs

I carry out small residential plaster repair and patching work, including:

• Holes and impact damage to plaster walls and ceilings
• Cracks and hairline fractures
• Minor cornice repairs
• Damage caused by furniture, doors or moving mishaps
• Holes left by removed fixtures, picture hooks, anchors and wall-mounted items
• Wear and tear in high-traffic areas
• Damage caused by household pets
• Minor alterations and maintenance work requiring patching
• Water-damaged plaster after the moisture source has been identified, repaired and the area is sufficiently dry

I use dust-extraction equipment during sanding and preparation where practical to help reduce airborne plaster dust. Some dust may still occur, particularly around furniture, fittings and textured surfaces.

Important note about cracks

Cracks can be caused by normal settlement, building movement, moisture, temperature changes or movement between different materials.

A suitable repair can improve the appearance and reduce the likelihood of the crack returning, but recurrence cannot be guaranteed where the underlying movement continues. Large, recurring or potentially structural cracks may require assessment by an appropriately qualified building professional.

Painting Options After a Plaster Repair

Once the plaster repair is ready for painting, there are two main options. The appropriate option depends on the required finish, the existing paint condition and the agreed budget.

Patch Painting

Patch painting involves painting only the repaired area. It is generally the more economical option, but a perfect colour, sheen or texture match cannot be guaranteed.

Existing paint may have changed because of age, fading, sun exposure, surface grime, previous paint batches, roller or brush texture and general wear.

New paint may remain visible against the surrounding surface once dry, particularly under direct light or when viewed from certain angles.

Unless full-surface painting is specifically included in the quote, painting is limited to the repaired area.

Painting the Full Wall or Surface Section

For the most uniform result, I generally recommend painting the full wall, ceiling or defined surface section containing the repair.

This usually provides a more consistent colour, sheen and texture across the surface. Existing coatings, surface condition, previous repairs, texture and lighting may still influence the finished appearance.

Safety and Suspected Asbestos

Please tell me before work begins if you know or suspect asbestos-containing material may be present in or near the work area.

Homes built before 1990 are likely to contain asbestos products, and homes built or renovated before 2003 may still contain them. Where this applies, I may need confirmation the area is safe, or suitable testing, before work proceeds.
